Candles
Ear Candles? What
exactly are ear candles? You might well ask, and you
might be equally surprised to discover that they are in
fact candles that you light and then put in your ear! You
need to take some precautions first of course, because
you don't want to set your hair on fire, or have wax drip
onto your face, but we will deal with that
later!
Ear candles are
made with beeswax and natural cotton fabric, and they are
tapered cylindrical candles that are hollow in the centre
and are between nine and twelve inches in length. In
ancient cultures ear candling, or the burning of ear
candles, was believed to be a spiritual cleansing, and
for others it was a means of practising better aural
cleanliness. It was believed that burning the ear candle
would kill infections and bacteria in the ear
canal.

So what happens
during an ear candling session? The person receiving the
treatment lies on his or her side, while the ear candle
is inserted into a protective plate, preferably a sturdy
one, the candle is lit and the tapered end of the
candle is then inserted gently into the ear canal. There
is no pain associated with this procedure, although the
individual may experience popping noises, or hear
crackling. Once the candle has been allowed to burn for
about ten minutes, it is carefully extinguished, and the
ear candle and plate is removed from the
ear.
If you then cut
open the ear candle, you will be able to see what the
convection action of the candle has removed from the ear.
You may be quite surprised! Now, the individual may
experience some warmth or even itching in the ears after
candling. Be reassured that this is a normal occurrence,
and if it is a problem, can be relieved by putting a
couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide into each ear,
removing any excess with a cotton swab.
According to
research, ear candling can help to relieve ear
infections, excessive wax, ear ringing, ear aches and
even headaches. Worth a try?
